The education of our children begins at home when the child is born and continues onwards thereafter. The foundation on which rearing your children is based, is encompassed in one word “love.” Without this important ingredient, nothing positive can be achieved. From true love stems the patience, devotion, and attention that parents need to give their offspring to nourish their healthy growth into mature adults. From day one, parents have to show love and give warmth to their babies even when they are sleep deprived. No one ever claimed that it is easy to raise good children. It takes a lot of understanding as well as many prayers to Hashem to be successful in this lifelong task.

Special education has been experiencing tough times lately. In December, new amendments to state regulations took effect which reduced some of the school districts’ obligations to students with autism and language disabilities. In February, Mayor Bloomberg argued in front of the New York State legislature that too many children with special needs are enrolled in private schools at the taxpayer’s expense; he wants it to be required that these children try public school first (even though the US Supreme Court recently ruled that a child does not have to try public school as a prerequisite to obtaining funding for a private school). Even more recently, there have been rumors that the State Education Department is proposing more amendments that would shrink the rights of students with disabilities even further.
