It is a world heritage site, and is considered to be the safest city in North America. Kahal Joseph Congregation

When Joseph Dabby arrived in America from Iraq in 1972 and found his way to Kahal Joseph Congregation in Los Angeles, he was shocked.

“It was like being back in the Old Country,” he said. “It was full of people who didn’t even speak the same language; they were very far removed from their roots, but they maintained everything the same—the same melodies and the same traditions.”

Behavior Guidance in Dentistry for Children

Children often have anxiety when they experience something new. It is natural to have a fear of the unknown and this fear can show itself as misbehavior in the dental office. Pediatric dentists have special training to help manage the fears of children and guide their behavior in the dental office. Pediatric dentists have several goals regarding children’s behavior. One is to have the child be comfortable during dental treatment. Another is to provide the optimum in dental treatment safely and easily for the patient. Still another is to encourage the child to continue regular dental visits in the future. Pediatric dentists have a variety of methods for achieving these goals.

Communication: Empathy and Understanding

Nancy Reagan created the slogan “just say no to drugs” as part of an advertising campaign to convince children across the United States not to engage in drug use. Dr. Abraham Twersky, poking fun at the lack of understanding the advertisement has for the difficulties people face with real life problems, has a similar slogan hanging on the wall of his drug clinic: “Nancy Reagan’s solution to the homeless, just get a home!”

Dental Treatments for Children

Many people think that routine dental treatment for children consists of putting “little fillings in little teeth.” In fact, treating decay (cavities) in children is an entirely different science from treating adults. Pediatric dentists have at least two years of graduate training after dental school to enable them to provide the correct care for children. Just as you wouldn’t think of bringing your child to any doctor other than a pediatrician, so should you bring your children to a pediatric dentist.

The Jews of Turkey

Central Synagogue in EdirneAs anti-Israeli sentiments dominate Turkish news reports, historical perspective is necessary. It should not be forgotten that the Ottoman Empire, and particularly its Turkish heartland, were traditionally regarded as relatively safe heavens for Jews fleeing foreign oppression. There are numerous accounts of Sephardic Jews arriving in Constantinople from the Iberian Peninsula and its Inquisitions, but less often recalled are the thousands of refugees who crossed over land from the Balkan area to Trakya, the regional name of European Turkey.

Acupuncture, Ancient Oriental Medicine

Before the 1970s, Oriental medicine was only practiced in the US by immigrants who brought the knowledge of its practice with them to the States. Until that time, acupuncture was basically ignored by non-Oriental Americans.

Early Orthodontics

Many children have orthodontic problems which develop at a young age. So parents want to know how early their children’s orthodontic problems need to be treated. Although some orthodontic problems are best treated with traditional braces after all permanent teeth have come in, many problems can and should be treated as soon as they are noticed, no matter how young a child is. Patients may be treated as early as four years old to correct and help prevent major orthodontic problems. With proper case selection, early orthodontic treatment by a pediatric dentist may be the only orthodontic treatment a child ever requires, or can make later treatment easier, quicker and less expensive later on. Above all, early treatment allows time to design a nice broad beautiful smile for a lifetime.
