Protect Your Children

bullyBullying Can Have Tragic Repercussions

Very soon, children will be trading sun and sand for paper and pencils as they return to the classroom for the start of a new school year. For some young people, this is a time of great stress and anxiety, because going back to school means going back to being bullied. Bullying has become a problem which can lead to tragic repercussions. That is why my colleagues and I are working hard to create effective anti-bullying initiatives. We need to protect our children and teens, not just from being teased and picked on, but from the emotional and psychological effects that can last a lifetime.
The 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, revealed that more than 20% of students, nationwide, in grades 9 through 12 experienced bullying. Thats only slightly less than one quarter of all the high school students in the US.

Bariatric and Pediatric Do Not Go Together!

Most overweight children have overweight parents. Too often, despite the health risks, many of these parents are in denial about the role they play in their childs obesity.

As obesity among young people continues to rise, these are the parents most likely to consider weight loss surgery for their adolescents and teens. After all, if they dont want to do the work to achieve a healthy weight of their own, how can they possibly do so for their kids?

Heres the hard truth: kids dont become obese on their own. Their parents create the environment in which they grow. Its the parents who dont want to shop for the right food, prepare it correctly, portion it appropriately, and feed it to their children. Parents with nonchalant attitudes towards their own weight perpetuate that in their children. That is the issue, plain and simple.

Knee Pain Treating Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis affects 13.9% of adults aged 25 and older and 33.6% of those aged 65 and older, which is an estimated 26.9 million US adults, making it the most common form of arthritis. Osteoarthritis or OA, very often affects the following joints: hands, feet, hips, spine and knees. This is the most common form of joint disease, with the lifetime risk of developing OA of the knee being a staggering 46% in the United States.

Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is characterized by the breakdown of hyaline cartilage (the tissue that is at the ends of bones and provides cushioning) and the underlying bone within the joint. It can also lead to deterioration of tendons and ligaments, and inflammation or swelling of the joint lining also known as synovium. The disease is typically seen in middle-aged to elderly people and its onset is usually gradual.

It affects both sexes but is more prevalent in people with risk factors that include: older age, obesity, overuse due to occupation or sports injury, family members with OA, or joint deformity. The specific causes of OA are unknown, but it is believed to be due to molecular and mechanical events in the joint that is affected.

Medicare Will Pay for You to Stop Snoring

Medicare recognizes that snoring is dangerous. They also realize that wearing a hose and a mask attached to a machine is very difficult for most people to sleep with. Medicare will now cover people with Medicare B for oral appliances so they can stop snoring and feel refreshed.

Snoring and a poor nights sleep can be a sign of a much greater problem: sleep apnea, which is a major health risk. Snoring is a warning sign and may be the first sign of obstructive sleep apnea. Snoring means your airway is partially blocked. The noise is produced by the vibration when air blows through a narrowed airway.

Sleep apnea means your airway is completely blocked. This can occur hundreds of times a night. Therefore, it is important to get checked immediately as enough oxygen may not be reaching your vital organs. Loud snorers have a 67% greater likelihood of a stroke,  40% greater likelihood of high blood pressure and a 34% greater likelihood of a heart attack than those who dont snore.

Skin Care for Teens

Teenage boys and girls need to know how to take care of their skinWhen teenagers come to me for a makeup consultation, I ask them how they take care of their skin. It seems there are two types of teenagers when it comes to skin care. Many are knowledgeable about cleansing. They get the main idea by reading magazines and advertisements. Upon delving further, I have discovered that some teenagers, as well as young adults, really do not know how to properly cleanse their skin.

Many girls sleep with their makeup occasionally when they are too tired to remove it. This clogs their pores and when not washing, or not washing thoroughly, becomes sporadic, their skin begins to show the signs. Sometimes they will get tiny dots on the surface of the skin. This is the pile-up of makeup that stays on the skin. Other times the facial pores begin to clog, forming pimples. This starts a secretion of oil build-up and eventually acne occurs.

The Aleppo Codex: A True Story of Obsession, Faith and the Pursuit of an Ancient Bible

Matti Friedman has written a thrilling book about the Aleppo Codex, the most authoritative version of the Bible, produced in the 10th century by the great Rabbi Aaron Ben-Asher and the scribe Shlomo ben Buya. Named for the Syrian city in which it was housed, the Codex, also known as the Crown of Aleppo, is said to protect those who cared for it and curse those who defile it.

It is not only the most authoritative biblical text, its known for its vocalization and cantillation, and for masorah (transmission), the tradition by which the Scriptures have been preserved from generation to generation.

The story goes: in the mid-11th century, the text was delivered to the Karaite community of Jerusalem, apparently after having been purchased from the heirs of Aaron ben Asher, whose family had been involved in creating and maintaining the masorah for five or six generations. Not long after, it was taken from Jerusalem and eventually wound up in the Rabbanite Synagogue in Cairo, where it was consulted by the Rambam (Maimonides), and upon which he based his Mishneh Torah. Maimonides descendants brought it to Aleppo, Syria, at the end of the 14th century, where the community guarded it zealously for over 600 years.

Bicycle Helmets Save Lives

Studies show that helmets are responsible for saving lives and lowering the risk of serious head injuries. A number of injuries would have been avoided altogether if helmets had been worn, particularly in children 15 and under. Riders of all ages benefit from wearing a helmet.

How much a bicycle helmet can prevent serious injury varies between different studies, but the one constant statistic is that helmets work. Studies have shown between 45 and 88% of brain injuries could have been prevented with helmet use and that wearing a helmet could prevent as many as 85% of head injuries.

Safety Message About Teenage Drinking

As the summer approaches, many teenagers in our community will attend social events that will serve alcohol. What can be done to eliminate the availability of alcohol at these parties? Cant teens socialize without alcohol? What are the repercussions for parents serving alcohol to underage teens?

It is illegal to drink under the age of 21. The Zero Tolerance laws prohibit driving after drinking any amount of alcohol. The teens license might be revoked and she/he will face possible legal consequences.

New Home for Magen David of Manhattan in Union Square

When our grandfathers arrived in New York City in the early twentieth century, the first step they took towards setting down roots was opening a synagogue in lower Manhattan. Since then, it seems we have come full circle. With the Edmond J. Safra Synagogue on the Upper East Side growing by leaps and bounds, and Magen David of Union Square on 16th Street moving into a new and bigger location on Sullivan Street, our presence in NYC is about to grow even stronger.

David Duke Dweck explains, We started out downtown more than a decade ago with Shabbat services for kids and young couples dorming or living in the neighborhood. Today, we have minyanim seven days a week, 365 days a year. We have holiday services and meals; weekly Humash, Talmud and halacha classes; we have served over 10,000 young adults at Shabbat dinners that we call Sufeh in the City, brought together many singles, and even watched four marriages blossom from scratch. We are here, and have been hereand you are using us, even when you dont realize it.

Greek Jews Fear for Their Future

Community donations have dropped by 50% at Beth Shalom Synagogue in Athens, since the start of the financial crisis.Patricia Alcalay, 24, has been unemployed since she finished her nursing degree in December, 2010. Her father lost his job four months ago, a year shy of retirement and her older sister, who was studying abroad, meanwhile, found work in the Netherlands and is not returning to Greece anytime soon.

Stories like these have become common among the Jewish community in Greece which, like the rest of the Greek population, is struggling to stay afloat in a country engulfed in the 5th year of an economic crisis that shows no sign of abating.
