Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States, causing almost 500,000 deaths annually. It has been the focus of tremendous effort and research in the medical community, and there have been tremendous advancements when it comes to heart disease, from preventing coronary artery disease, to stopping heart attacks in their tracks, and hopefully in the future, to regenerating new heart muscle after a heart attack.
Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, Chairman of the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Committee, and the Orthodox Union jointly sponsored a round table discussion looking into drug and alcohol abuse in the Jewish community.

The Yeshivah of Flatbush held its 2nd Annual Suzanne Blaine AH Dine and Discuss event at the Joel Braverman High School recently. The program inspires children and their parents to read a book together, that the school chose for them to read, talk about it and then join other families (over 200 parents and teenagers attended the event) for discussions over dinner and in small seminars.

Over 500 students, parents, faculty and community members listened intently as four charismatic and astute businessmen from the community presented Strategies for Success in the New Global Economy. Hosted by Hillel Yeshiva, the panel addressed the following questions: Where are the new opportunities in business? How can we benefit from them? What areas are growing the fastest? How do choices our children make today, determine their future success? Does higher education influence our childrens path to success?
Magen David Yeshivah High School recently launched their Sephardic Heritage Program by gathering the entire student body and staff together to view the documentary film produced by our communitys own Mr. Joseph Sitt. Three thousand community members had the opportunity to attend the premiere of the inaugural film last year at Lincoln Center and since then thousands more have seen it at several other venues.

He has synthesized the works of both traditional and modern scholars to produce a compelling commentary on the straightforward meaning of this supremely important text.
The long awaited Madison Sephardic Mikveh on Avenue R recently opened their doors to the women of the Madison community. The new mikveh is open seven evenings a week. With its serene atmosphere and spa-like feel, it is a lovely and needed addition to our community.

Sutton, Co-president of TEACH NYS, on the steps of City Hall recently to applaud the decision to exempt private and parochial schools from the MTA payroll tax. Prior to this agreement between Governor Andrew Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, only public schools were exempt from the tax.
