Growing up is a mixture of feelings for most young people and I was no exception to the rule. During his lifetime, my father and I did not always see things eye to eye and the lessons he tried to teach were toughold school is what they called it back then.

My dad had a lot of things he wanted his first born son to learn about in life. I had other plans and a mind of my own. Looking back, of course, everything he tried to instill in me was 100% right, and I was 100% stubborn and thought he was old fashioned.

Colon Cancer: Deadly but Preventable

One of the fundamental precepts of Judaism is the inherent and infinite value of human life. This sentiment is strongly echoed in the famous maxim of the Gemara which states: Whoever saves a life, it is as if he has saved the entire Universe.

As the famous saying goes: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In the next few paragraphs, I would like to discuss what I believe is one of the most important and underutilized preventative and potentially lifesaving tools available to our community: screening colonoscopy!

Vote for Politicians Who Support School Choice

School choice “voucher system” is a common sense idea that gives every parent the power and freedom to choose where their children are educated.

It is immoral that the quality of schooling that your child receives is based on the value and location of your home. School choice allows parents to choose a school based on its quality and their childs needs, not their address.

Be Heart Smart

Take good care of your heartCardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States, causing almost 500,000 deaths annually. It has been the focus of tremendous effort and research in the medical community, and there have been tremendous advancements when it comes to heart disease, from preventing coronary artery disease, to stopping heart attacks in their tracks, and hopefully in the future, to regenerating new heart muscle after a heart attack.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse in the Jewish Community

Twerski, Ike Dweck, and Dr. Andrew KolodnyAssemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, Chairman of the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Committee, and the Orthodox Union jointly sponsored a round table discussion looking into drug and alcohol abuse in the Jewish community.

The event took place at, the Young Israel of Midwood. Thirty experts including rabbis, social workers, doctors, psychologists, counselors, program directors and attorneys got together to discuss this important issue.

SAFE Promotes Awareness About Alcohol and Drug Addiction At MDY

beerThere are many forms of addictions. Would you think twice about having an alcoholic drink? What are the dangers of drug addiction? What would have to happen to lead an addict to realize they need help?

The SAFE Foundation recently held a special program for 9th and 10th grade students at Magen David Yeshivah Celia Esses High School that helped answer those questions and more. The assembly stressed  the dangers of drug and alcohol addiction and the consequences people face when addictions take over their lives.

2nd Annual Dine and Discuss at YOF

The program inspires children and their parents to read a book together, that the school chose for them to read, talk about it and then join other families (over 200 parents and teenagers attended the event) for discussions over dinner and in small seminars.

How do choices our children make today, determine their future success? Does higher education influence our childrens path to success?

MDY Students Learn About Sephardic Heritage

Rabbi HaberMagen David Yeshivah High School recently launched their Sephardic Heritage Program by gathering the entire student body and staff together to view the documentary film produced by our communitys own Mr. Joseph Sitt. Three thousand community members had the opportunity to attend the premiere of the inaugural film last year at Lincoln Center and since then thousands more have seen it at several other venues.
