Take impressive artwork, melodic musical performances, delicious food and incredible prizes and what do you get? The Yeshivah of Flatbush Expressions Chinese Auction 2009!

It was a wonderful night, despite the frigid temperatures and snowy weather. YOF family members: parents, lay leaders, alumni, friends, faculty and staff always pull together to work for YOF’s children, but this year, faced with the ongoing world economic crisis, their dedication to the success of the event was particularly supportive. The generosity of so many of YOF’s friends was very much appreciated.

The creative talents of over 60 YOF students were showcased at the auction, giving the event a truly unique appeal. Artwork in acrylic, pastel, crayon and watercolors adorned the walls of Shaare Zion Congregation. It was inspiring enough to be in any art gallery in NYC.

Members of the Joel Braverman High School Orchestra, directed by Mr. Joel Hessel, gave an outstanding performance on piano, guitar and drums. Solo instrumental performances by many of our students were appreciated by the crowd and a musical collaboration by the Teitelbaum family ensemble was wonderful to behold.

Auction coordinators Amy Aini and Becky Cohen worked tirelessly to create an amazing event. Esther Shasho and her committee of volunteers did an excellent job getting all of the fabulous auction prizes. The “Expressions” booklet, designed by Bertha Sabbagh, portrayed the theme of the night in a dramatic format, building anticipation for the event during the weeks preceding the auction. The theme of artistic expression was dramatically evoked in the room’s décor; it was adorned with dramatic masks, sheet music and gold frames dangling throughout, thanks to the creativity of Jamie Bailey and Carla Zeitouny. It was a child-friendly night, with the Brain Challenge Game Show and a special kids buffet. The Instant Win Game, organized by Frieda Lubin, offered lots of great prizes and coupons to win.

Many prize winners were called that night, but hopefully everyone felt like a winner. Providing our children with quality Jewish education is key to sustaining our Jewish communities. Helping to do that is an especially important endeavor.
