It was two stories high and 26 feet wide. The huge, inflatable movie screen towered over the blanketed grass at Reach for the Stars’ first annual movie night.

Instead of directing airplanes, skylights shone throughout Deal in the darkened sky, leading people to their destination at the lot on Park and Ocean Avenues. About 300 community members of all ages enjoyed barbecue, candy, a popcorn machine, Chinese Auction and, of course, an entertaining movie. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is an all-time favorite and spectators were enthralled to see it, whether for the first or millionth time.

Norma Chehebar and Nancy Levy organized the event to raise funds for Reach for the Stars (RFTS), a school that caters to autistic children in the community. “It’s a very important cause, especially considering how in the past few years the cases of autistic children in the community have multiplied,” said Norma.

Inspired by the big screen in Bryant Park, organizers thought a movie night would be a great way to attract community members of all ages. It was a big hit. Although it was rained out the first time around, every one agreed they received a beautiful evening in return.

Massive amounts of soft blue blankets with RFTS stitched on them were sold. Teenagers were the largest group present, and many stretched out on the carpet of grass or sat around circular tables set up to accommodate diners.

A special committee planned the details of the night down to the last Laffy Taffy. Honey Anteby, Michael Eliau, Lucy Gabbay, Louis Jerome, Jacqueline Krost, Shirley Mizrahi, Valerie Mizrahi and Allie Sutton met frequently to ensure the evening’s success. “I couldn’t have done it without the committee,” said Norma. “They went above and beyond their responsibilities. They offered to do so much without having to and are such special people.”

Many other community members helped out during the actual event. “There were kids lining up to be volunteers,” said Norma. “That says a lot about our
community.”

Regardless of age, people had a great time and smiles and laughter were observed all around. “I was happy it was such a great success and that so many people showed their support for Reach for the Stars,” said Norma. “We hope to see you again next year!”
