Mosaic art has become quite popular, especially with young girls. But what exactly is it? Mosaic is the art of creating patterns or pictures using an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. It can be used as a technique for decorative art, or as an aspect of interior decoration.
āI took a mosaic class, and I fell in love with the art of mosaics. I love the fact that you can make ordinary things extraordinary by decorating with pieces of glass and tile. Each and every piece is unique and always comes out beautiful,ā said Ruth Salama.
After taking a liking to mosaic art and the beauty it possesses, Ruth has come to enjoy teaching mosaic art to children of all ages. This past summer she taught art at the Sephardic Community Center camp. For the 
younger campers, she incorporated mosaic art using foam and construction paper. Mosaic art was also incorporated into the curriculum for teens.
āI love when the children use their creativity and make their projects unique and special. One thing that I realized from teaching children was how surprised the parents were to have projects that they were proud to display in their homes, and that was very special. I also was amazed at how children of a relatively young ageāas young as four years oldācan develop the necessary skills so quickly and make stunningly creative and unique projects,ā said Ruth.
Some projects that have been made in Ruthās classes include fatherās day picture frames, jewelry boxes, framed mirrors, and more.
Ruth is teaching mosaics at school-organized programs during the week, and will hold her own programs for children (K through 8th grade) on Friday afternoons and Sunday mornings this fall.
