SEAD’s Innovative Approach Empowers Students with Difficulties

Educating a child involves more than just classroom instruction. There are a host of different components that must come together to enable successful academic and social development.

Take Sam, an adorable 4-year-old boy with a charming, personable, and friendly nature. Sam’s parents enrolled him in the local pre-school, where his big brother Nathan had a fantastic time and made great strides in his development. Sam however, always seemed to be on the move, making it difficult for his parents and teachers to keep him grounded and safe.

2013 Kings County District Attorney Citation of Honor Presented to Students

Held annually for the past 23 years, the Kings County District Attorney Charles J. Hynes Citation of Honor is presented to Brooklyn students of merit. To qualify, these students must exhibit qualities of outstanding leadership, character and service in promoting progress through justice within their schools and communities.

Restrictions Are Prescriptions: Spiritual and Physical Health

The job of every parent is to constantly shower his/her children with love and support.  Demonstrating true love for our children begins with proper discipline.  As parents, we must instill in our children the necessity of suitable friends, a healthy routine and a proper education. Children might view these things as restrictions, but as they grow older they will realize that the restrictions were a prescription against a toxic future. Education begins with proper Torah lessons. A Torah based life is a prescription for spiritual and physical health.

Arts season at the Yeshivah of Flatbush is exciting. Multiple events were held  recently to celebrate the visual and performing arts. Joel Braverman High School recently held its Third Annual Evening of the Arts. The event showcased the varied artistic pursuits of talented students, with vocal and dramatic performances and a display of graphic and visual arts.

The Power of One: Continuing the Legacy of Ezra Cornman A”H

When Ezra’s brother David Cornman went to Israel for a year after graduating High School, upon a Rabbi’s advice, David made a commitment to make a change & not watch movies for 2 months to improve himself religiously & concentrate on his studies. Soon after, David met Rabbi Simcha, the son of revered Rabbi Sheinberg who was known throughout the world as “The Tzizit Rabbi” for handing out Tzizit to men in an effort to get them to carry on this mitzvah. When David asked the Rabbi’s son for a pair of his father’s Tziztit he was told that they no longer give them out.

Sephardic Heritage Day at Manhattan Day School

The sounds of Habibi and the aroma of fresh burekas filled the halls of Manhattan Day School/Yeshiva Ohr Torah (MDS) at its Second Annual Sephardic Heritage Day. Excitement was in the air as dozens of parents joined the students in celebration of Sephardic religious, cultural and culinary traditions.

YOF Students Research Their Genealogical Past

When called on to teach a class on genealogy to seniors as part of their Sephardic history class at Yeshiva of Flatbush High School, I was excited. This was an opportunity to help students see their connection to our rich Sephardic heritage.

July In Jewish History: Operation Entebbe

JULY 4, 1976
Operation Entebbe was a rescue mission performed by several IDF units in Uganda on July 4th 1976, for the liberation of 98 Jewish and Israeli hostages. Their plane, an Air France aircraft, was hijacked on June 27th, by Palestinian and German terrorists. The hijackers landed the plane at Benghazi, Libya and flew it from there to Entebbe in Uganda, where all non-Jewish passengers were freed. Israel tried to develop a dialogue with Ugandan President Idi Amin, who collaborated with the terrorists. Simultaneously, preparations began for a military operation.

Dr. Jack Fatiha Sworn In As Honorary FDNY Medical Officer

At a recent induction ceremony, Jack Fatiha, MD, was sworn in by FDNY Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano. Other dignitaries, including our community’s Supreme Court Justice Bruce M. Balter, were present to congratulate the newest member of this elite group of surgeons.
