A Light, Delicious, Kosher Culinary Experience
There’s a wonderful restaurant in downtown Brooklyn called Olga’s on Smith, a kosher café under the strict supervision of OK. It’s a hot new eatery where you’ll find Lubavitchers sitting next to trendy local artists. The clientele reflects the new Brooklyn—a fusion of all backgrounds—and like the customers, the food is a combination of different culinary influences. Dishes have Italian roots, Mexican flavors, Asian spices and Middle Eastern ingredients.
All the food is light and wholesome, prepared with fresh herbs and olive oil. Paninis are their specialty. The lox, arugula and goat cheese panini is a favorite. Other delicious paninis include the pizza panini made with black olives, tomato sauce and mozzarella; a Mediterranean cheese panini with sun dried tomatoes, black olives and feta; and their spicy tuna panini made with tuna, hot sauce and cheddar cheese. There are so many delectable paninis, it’s hard to choose just one.
Olga Shraer, a self-taught chef who moved from Moscow to New York in 1981, says she was inspired to open a kosher café so she could invite her observant friends over for dinner. She started with a small-scale kosher soup business which was so popular it grew into her current restaurant, which still serves fabulous homemade soups and has an amazing assortment of vegetables to build your own salad. There’s definitely something to please every palate.
The food is simple, yet heavenly and healthy, made with the freshest ingredients. Their dairy as well as strictly nondairy (parve) menu items are available for both takeout and sit-down meals, as well as catering and in-house parties for up to 45 people.
The restaurant’s modern, minimalist décor provides a sense of tranquility and serenity and the cafeteria style service and open kitchen give it a slick, fresh, atmosphere.
Located in Carroll Gardens, tucked away between Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights, Olga’s is the only kosher dairy establishment in downtown Brooklyn.
The entire dining experience is lovely, light and airy. Olga’s is the perfect place for lunch or dinner with family and friends. It’s open every day except Saturday. Once you experience Olga’s food you’ll want to return often.
