Every Monday night throughout the year in Brooklyn, there is fun in the air at Shell Lanes, where the SBL (Sal and Bags’ League) takes place.

A few years ago, two members of the now defunct EBL (Egyptian Bowling League) missed the competitive action they had enjoyed, so they started up their own league. Solly Elmann and Joey Baghdadi began with just a handful of friends, and through word of mouth, the league has grown from just six teams to 16 teams.

Each team consists of three members whose averages vary anywhere from 90 to 200. In order to aide all skill levels, an 85% team handicap is added in to make the playing field equal for all.

The league is split into two divisions for the 10-week season. This season, only 12 of the 16 teams will make the playoffs, which will culminate in the league finals that consist of each division champion. The winning team wins the grand prize of $500/player. The runner-up team wins the consolation prize of $150/player.

Teams can consist of any combination of friends, family members, or any individuals who are just looking to have a good time. Presently, the league consists of an amazing group of people from the community, who range in age from teens to senior citizens, with and without bowling experience.

Teams play three games against each other per week, with each game worth three points in the standings. At the end of the night, the team whose three game total is highest gets the “wood,” which is worth four points towards the standings.

After each week’s games, the league website is updated with the revised averages, scores and standings. In addition, a spread sheet is emailed out so players can track their personal and team’s play. You can check out the website at pin_kings.bravehost.com.

Another special feature the league implements is “cards.” In order to allow all the league members to participate and actually have a chance to win some bonus money, at the end of each game, each player counts up their strikes and spares. Every strike is worth one playing card while two spares equal one card. The best poker hand, throughout the league, per game, wins the bonus. It has added a lot of intrigue to the league, as all tiers of players have won, not just those with the best averages.

“The atmosphere here is awesome! We hang out with our friends, make new ones, and are a part of some fun competition. Plus, I love playing with my teammates—my dad and my brother,” said Julia Baghdadi (the league’s lone female member).

Last season’s SBL champions, The Shararis, had an incredible run in the playoffs, which eventually led to an upset victory over the league’s powerhouse The Steroids, in the SBL finals. This season has been just as exciting as we are coming down the home stretch with just a couple of weeks remaining in the regular season, and only one playoff spot clinched, out of the available 12.

If you’re looking for a fun, relaxing, exciting and competitive way to spend your Monday nights, come join the SBL. Spots are now available for the spring 2009 season, for both men and women. If you would like to sign up or get any additional information, please email TheSBL1@aol.com.
