Over 200 mothers and daughters attended Hillel Yeshivas second annual Follow Your Dreams career luncheon, recently. The event, for seventh through twelfth grade girls and their mothers, featured five panelists who shared their inspiring journeys to becoming professionals in diverse fields.
The program began with an introduction by Dr. Ruth Katz, Head of School, and an inspiring Dvar Torah by Rabbi Saul J. Kassin, Rosh Yeshiva/Halachic Authority. Dr. Gayle Krost, Vice President, Hillel Yeshiva and Chairman, Board of Education, welcomed everyone to the program which was a tribute to the memory of Mr. Saul E. Ashkenazi AH.
Dr. Krost emphasized that we are here because of his leadership and vision, beginning over three decades ago. Mr. Ashkenazi gave us the opportunity to build this school on this land, and its not only the physical foundations that we have to thank him for. We are able to have an event like this, where we can talk about following our dreams and the paths our lives will take beyond high school, because of the broad base of a Hillel Yeshiva education.
The panel of community women spoke about their own educational backgrounds and how they have been able to pursue successful careers, raise families and also be active in community service.
Mrs. Frieda Cattan, attended New York University School of Education, The Drisha Institute for Women and received a degree from Allegra Franco Sephardic Womens Teachers College. Currently a high school Judaic Studies teacher at Magen David Yeshivah, Mrs. Cattan spoke about the importance of continuing ones Torah studies and how wonderful her experience was at the Allegra Franco College for Women. She explained that after her children were older she was able to resume her education and that it is never too late to begin something new and fulfilling.
Dr. Nelly Huppert attended California State University and received a medical degree from University of Southern California School of Medicine. A practicing radiation oncologist, Dr. Huppert explained that pursuing a higher education is critical to ones success and that with more learning comes more understanding and the ability to overcome ones fears.
Mrs. Allegra Joyce Kassin is the daughter of Saul E. Ashkenazi. An acclaimed author of childrens books, she spoke about the value of giving and helping to repair the world. Her series, Alphabet Kids, promotes tolerance and the acceptance of individual differences.
Mrs. Elaine Parker is a graduate of Douglas College, Rutgers University, a member of the Board of Directors of Hillel Yeshiva and Vice President of the Ezra Abraham to Life Foundation. She is a marketing and promotions entrepreneur, who spoke about believing in oneself, not allowing anyone to discourage you from your goals and making the most of opportunities that come your way.
Mrs. Shiri Zimmerman, an alumna of Hillel Yeshiva Elementary and High School, Barnard College and Fordham Universitys School of Law is an attorney. She told the audience that when she started her family she was able to have a more flexible work schedule. Although she is not currently practicing law, she uses her knowledge and skills in the volunteer work she does for the community.
The importance of family, pursuing higher education and believing in oneself resonated in each of the presentations. It was evident that this program inspired every person in attendance to believe that she could make a difference.
As parents we hope that our young women will set goals for themselves, have rewarding careers and fulfill their own dreams. Through programs of this kind, Hillel Yeshivas young women are able to see that education beyond high school is important and to appreciate that this small group of women represent a larger group of strong committed women who have realized their dreams and have become invaluable assets to our community.
