Hillel Girls Win First Annual Dance Contest

Hillel’s first-ever dance team recently traveled to MAYHS to participate in an inaugural dance contest for yeshivah high school girls. The contestants had practiced diligently for only a month, and were anticipating no more than having a great time doing what they love: dancing.

The team was comprised of 12 freshmen and sophomores who had practiced after school to perfect their choreography. The girls were assisted in planning their routine by Pauline Dweck, a Hillel Yeshiva alumna and sister of participant, Mariel. The team’s spirit and enjoyment grew stronger as the routines became familiar.

Each participating school had to have a faculty advisor to preview the dance and make sure it was suitable for an all-woman “kosher” audience. Teams could choose any instrumental music without lyrics or with a minimum of words and props to augment their routines.

The purpose of the evening was for high school girls to come together and have fun in a meaningful way while raising money for Lev LaLev, a girl’s orphanage in Israel. The winning team would also receive half of the profits for its school scholarship fund.

The Hillel team gave their best effort which reflected their team spirit and won first place!

Thanks go to the faculty advisors Joyce Betesh and Chedva Perr. Congratulations go to the talented and dedicated members of Hillel’s winning team: Jacqueline Cohen, Mariel Dweck, Jacklyn Gammal, Shira Harary, Sylvia Kassin, Shelley Nehama, Alex Noyman, Joyce Saka, Terry Shamah and Lindsay Tillis.
