Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Deal

Big brothers with Mr. Z

On a crisp fall Sunday, under a clear blue sky, the Big Brothers and Sisters of Deal kicked off this year with an action-packed BBQ. Our own Mr. Z was there to help organize games, sports and other events. The children got to know each other, and the big brothers and sisters became acquainted with their younger brothers and sisters. The abundance of BBQ burgers and hot dogs was outdone by cotton candy, popcorn and snow cones from our very own machines! There was face painting, crafts and lots of smiles! The wonderful chemistry amongst everyone was clearly visible, assuring that it would be a great year for all.

Throughout the year, the big brothers and sisters bond with their little brothers and sisters over movies, dinners, bowling and other fun activities. In order to keep the big brothers and sisters well equipped to deal with any scenario that may arise, monthly meetings are held with our wonderful SBH support staff. Here we are able to brainstorm on how to keep things interesting for the younger brothers and sisters while simultaneously heading off potential pitfalls.

Several group outings are planned during the year to maintain a spirit of unity. Holidays are a special time for the big brothers and big sisters. Last Hanukah, everyone was treated to a lavish dinner at Mazenobeh while being entertained by a comedic magician. At the end of the evening, the younger kids got to take home their very own professional caricature. To celebrate the festivities of Purim, the big brothers and big sisters took their younger counterparts to the Big Apple Circus. A great time was had by all. Both young and old were amazed by the unique talent!

As the previous year wound down to a close, everyone was invited to a farewell brunch. The brunch provided an opportunity for everyone in the group to share their memories of the year through photographs, bid farewell, and thank their big brother and sister for a wonderful year. The big brothers and sisters were then presented with plaques from SBH in recognition of their unwavering commitment to the Big Brother Little Brother program. We will miss them, and wish them the best of luck in all their endeavors. May they continue to lead lives full of hesed.

As a new year is underway, we look forward to another exciting and successful year from our Deal Big Brothers and Sisters. We encourage any Deal area teen, at least 17 years of age, to be part of this rewarding program.  For more information, please contact Pam Kassin at SBH: (732) 531-1117.
