Recently, the students, faculty, parents, administration and supporters of Barkai Yeshivah continued a years-old tradition of gathering at Manhattan Beach to celebrate Lag La’Omer. Summer was in the air and the emphasis on the Barkai family was profound. Everyone came to enjoy the fun, including fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters.
The sky was clear and the bold sunset produced the perfect backdrop for the event. Even though it was a bit chilly, especially in the twilight, children ran on the sand barefoot and talk of Memorial Day, Shavuot and summer plans echoed throughout the crowd. While the sun was still whole, kites sailed in the sky and the cheers of games of soccer and catch filled the air.
As the evening approached, barbecues were lit and hot dogs and marshmallows were roasted. A scavenger hunt left the children sufficiently occupied and a bonfire closed the evening with a glow.
Thanks to the Barkai PTA for this beautiful event.
The following week, in honor of Israel’s 60th anniversary, Barkai Yeshivah joined throngs of other supporters of the State of Israel in the Salute to Israel Parade. The weather and mood were perfect—the sun was shining, spirits were high, Israeli pride was everywhere—and the attendance was record-breaking.
Students, parents, faculty and administration patiently waited for their turn to show their love of the State of Israel. The wait was long but you would have never known it from the pride on their faces and in their voices when Barkai finally made its way up Fifth Avenue. In addition to their marchers, Barkai had numerous supporters cheering from all along the parade sidelines.
These two events served as a great finale for the 2007-08 school-year. They left us anticipating the great things that lie ahead during the upcoming year.
