A League of Our Own

This summer our very own “A League of Our Own” baseball league hit Deal, NJ. Every Thursday morning, women of all ages met at Fireman’s Field to play softball. Anyone near the field could hear the laughter and friendships booming and blossoming.

There were four teams this year and every team showed up to win. Competition was fierce. Fittingly the teams were named The Rolling Yebrets, The Mechshe Squashers, The Oots, and The Killer Kusas. The teams; dedicated captains, Michelle Kassab, Renee Dweck, Sarah Abadi, and Jaclyn Cohen all coached their teams beautifully. As the weeks went on, the talent and competition became more evident due to the practices leading up to each week’s game.

Eddie Anzaroooth was the backbone of the league. He was there without fail every Thursday morning making sure the field was set up properly. Eddie was always supportive and coached anyone who asked. His arrangement of professional umpires, scorekeepers, website with weekly stats, and field preparation set the tone for a serious competitive environment.

On the day of every game, the players showed up with fresh cleats, wearing their team’s uniform. Hitting, catching, and laughing on display each game for the fans who showed up to cheer on their moms, daughters, granddaughters, and wives. Spectators could feel the excitement in the air during each inning’s intense rivalry.

With the playoffs, approaching, we know that each team will bring 110%. It was long overdue, but we finally created A League of Our Own.
