Some people like large gatherings, others more intimate get-togethers, but one thing is for certain—there can never be enough opportunities for the singles of our community to meet and mingle. Kudos to all the organizations and institutions out there who, with their tireless committees, work diligently to keep our singles entertained, safe, and unified.

To help kick off an event-filled summer were three unique activities—two held at the Jersey Shore—a paintball excursion on Memorial Day weekend, a karaoke competition on the Saturday night of Shavuot weekend, and a Tea Lounge Night held in the beautiful lobby of Magen David Yeshivah.

The paintball event brought out the die-hard action types, who taught some of the newbies who attended how it’s done. A delicious BBQ prepared by Ray “T” capped off a beautiful, albeit ‘messy’ afternoon. Thanks to Grace Cayre and Lillian Massry for all their help.

The karaoke competition was the brainchild of Joey ‘Stick’ Mizrahi, who envisioned a night of hilarity and excitement at Stingers in Long Branch. What they didn’t realize was they would have an astounding 400 singles there that night! The contestants were Ephraim Setton, Jacklyn Hakim, Jack Anzarouth, Nina Haber, Jimmy Ades, Mourad Shehebar, Sonja Cabasso, Joey Shemtob, David Tawil and Murray Tebele. Sonja was reigned champ after singing “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith. The judges were Joey Sutton, Gail Cohen, Tara Harary, Mirna Mandil and Jack “Gernie” Ashkenazie. A special thanks to Millie Marcus, Brian Nave, Grace Cayre, Harry Tawil, Liz Ashear and Maurice Gindi for helping out, and to Sephardic Link for their support in both events.

Lastly, Ariel Cohen, Yvonne Harari and the ever-so-capable volunteers of the MDM committee pulled off a wonderful Tea Lounge Night during the Omer with the MDY elementary school atrium as the magnificent backdrop for the event. It was filled with couches, ottomans, flowers, trees, candles and a tea/coffee bar.

The endless amounts of desserts and over 30 types of tea and coffee were a huge hit at the event. With so little to do during the Omer, this night was a welcome refresher for singles to socialize. Many thanks to the the MDM Committee; Linda Maleh, Shari Terzi, Claire Rahmey, Danielle Zeitoune, Celia Esses, Morris Cohen, Menashe Gaeiro, David Cohen, and Joey Harary who helped put together the event; and thanks to Avenue J Florists and Zami Caterers for making the MDY atrium feel like a cozy lounge.
