The Sephardic Community Center’s Early Childhood department recently held its annual bake sale, focusing on “Getting Your Kids Back on Track.” This year’s bake sale was graciously hosted by Gladys and Richard Haddad.

The entire day was enjoyable and the main attraction was Jessica Seinfeld, wife of comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who spoke about her famous cookbook, Deceptively Delicious, which contains simple secrets to get your kids to eat healthy food. Warmly displaying simple recipes with healthy solutions, she was genuinely down-to- earth and took time to give tips and autograph copies of her cookbook.

Deceptively Delicious offers wonderful recipes that introduce childrens’ tastebuds to healthy foods, and in some ways deceiving them by camouflaging them in foods they adore, such as brownies. Many vegetables are pureed and frozen to be used for recipes without the last minute work. It’s a great concept if you can get away with it!

“I came here today in support of the Sephardic community because so many community members have supported my charity, Baby Buggy, and you should all feel privileged to be part of such a wonderful community,” said Jessica Seinfeld.

Many of her recipes were cooked and sold at the bake sale. A stunning replica cake of her cookbook was presented to Jessica, magnificently designed and baked by Margalit Dweck.

In addition to Jessica’s appearance, there was a brain gym, which consisted of a program of physical movements that enhance learning and performance. Bonnie Shams, an occupational therapy specialist spoke about maximizing your child’s potential through play, and the community’s top bakers auctioned off their specialty holiday cakes.

Many thanks go to Claudia Barnathan, Sophia Betesh, Sarah Cheney, Esther Halwani, Adelaide Khezrie, Ruth Oved, Ruth Salama, Julie Sherr and the Early Childhood Department and to all of the committee members for an exciting afternoon. Frieda Azrak and Marlene Bibi did an exquisite job setting up the Chinese Auction. Pictures are provided by Victor Gindi. Special thanks to Sam E. Haddad for arranging Jessica’s appearance. The afternoon proved to be a positive and successful start to the fall season with hundreds of women in attendance. What a great way to jumpstart the new school year!
