Congregation Edmond J. Safra of NYC recently held an event to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) at Holiday House, The Science Academy Mansion on the Upper East Side in NYC. Our community toured a magnificent designer show house designed by interior designers from NYC and California. All the rooms were designed to benefit BCRF. The Holiday House was founded by Iris Danker with production by Barbara Schorr.
Ohel David and Shlomo Congregation, located by the bay in Manhattan Beach, was put through the mill, thanks to Superstorm Sandy, but little more than a year later we are thrilled to announce that both the synagogue and event hall are back in full swing and more beautiful than ever.

This year the Aleh Foundation will honor distinguished leaders impacting areas of medicine and mental health, education and arts at their dinner on May 21, 2014 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage. The distinguished Civic Leadership Award will be presented to Congressman Robert Turner who has shown dedication to—and support for—important global causes, as well as major Jewish causes. Congressman Turner recently commended Israel for the manner in which it is defending its citizens and called on President Obama to back his statements.
Do you suspect that someone you love is suffering from depression? Could it just be a case of the blues? In 2008, Jennifer Hyman was in New York City on Thanksgiving break from her second year at Harvard Business School when her younger sister Becky showed off a $1,600 Marchesa dress she had just purchased for a wedding. The price tag was far out of Becky’s budget, and Hyman, after seeing the “kazillion other dresses” in Becky’s closet, asked her sister why she couldn’t just wear one of those. The three-pronged answer: She didn’t like any of them anymore; she had already been photographed in all of them (and pictures from the wedding would go all over Facebook); and she couldn’t stand to repeat an outfit.

The city of Granada in southern Spain has announced the opening of a museum dedicated to the culture of Sephardic Jews who used to live there before the Inquisition. The museum, which is called The Palace of the Forgotten, is housed inside the Santa Ines Palace located in Albaicin—a neighborhood in the city’s old center where many Jews lived before 1492.
It all began four and a half years ago when I wanted to take my 3 year old and 6 month old daughters for a professional photo session. Because every little girl needs a beautiful bow for every occasion, I searched high and low for the perfect headbands to match their outfits. I did find some beautiful pieces, however, the prices were a bit higher than I was comfortable spending and the quality was not up to par. Being that I always loved crafts, and especially loved dolling up my girls, I decided to give bow making a try.

How a child is treated by the person who raises him can make all the difference in what type of life he’ll lead. A new study says that if one was raised with criticism, yelling, or threats, he’s more likely to be anxious or depressed as a young adult. Once a person is thus affected, the likelihood he’ll become involved in substance abuse increases, as he may turn to drugs and alcohol to mask pain and discomfort. Research does indeed indicate that those with anxiety disorders are two to three times more likely than the general population to have an alcohol or other substance abuse disorder at some point in their lives.
