MDY’s Second Annual Internship Banquet

Recently, the seniors of Magen David Yeshivah Celia Esses High School gathered for the 2nd Annual Internship Banquet. Over 90 seniors were placed in 24 areas of interest, in 48 different businesses. They were given the opportunity to intern while preparing for their futures. The jobs gave them valuable experience they will take with them as they move forward from high school, as well as a sense of responsibility.

“In the parashah we read about the counting of the people of Israel, tonight we count 90 interns and the tremendous job they have done,” said Richard Altabe, principal of Magen David Yeshivah Celia Esses High School.

In 2008, Sabrina Maleh, Associate Principal of MDY, along with her career discovery team, launched an internship program for 12th graders in order to give them job experience. The program has given many students the opportunity to try a specific field in the workforce before graduating from high school. and has guided them in making decisions for their futures. Maleh was presented a plaque for all of her hard work and dedication.

“In the summer of 2008, MDY embarked on a journey. From inception to completion, the Class of 2010 has made my team, the faculty, their  parents and the community proud. Tonight is a tribute to the students and their advisors,” said Maleh.

During the banquet, the interns were able to sit with their families and their employers while enjoying a delicious dinner prepared by the MDY kitchen staff in celebration of their hard work.

“We are here to celebrate the students who have had a chance to learn about themselves—who they are, and what they want to be. Tonight is a celebration of this accomplishment,” said MDY Hesed Program Director Charles Anteby.

Several interns spoke about their experiences. “I worked at Sephardic Career Services. I sent clients on interviews, attended interviews, organized summer jobs, and prepared and encouraged clients. It shows how strong our community is. Thank you to Magen David Yeshivah for putting me out there in the world,” said Norma Chabbott.

“When I first started, my employers pushed me to learn Photoshop, so I could make a newsletter. I learned that I love graphic design, and it’s what I want to do,” said Sharon Cohen.

Many students were amazed at what that had learned, and grew more confident every day they worked.

“I am not afraid of the real world. The internship program opens the students’ minds to new ideas, while giving them the experience to try new things,” said intern Louiza Shaaya.  

Andrew Leibowitz introduced Alla Zats, who managed the interns in Maimonides. Fourteen interns were part of this year’s program. Alla was presented the Internship Employer of the Year Award.

“It is a privilege and an honor. The interns made an impact and a wonderful impression and an enormous difference. Magen David Yeshivah became partners with Hashem in helping the hospital and helping others,” she said.

Yosef Ben Chaviv from the career discovery office was this year’s recipient of the internship award. The program could not have been possible without the guidance and assistance of Abe Tawil, Beth Goldberg, and Yosef  Ben Chaviv, Laurie Michaels, Andrew Leibowitz, Charles Anteby, Daniel Kamelhar, Shirley Zeitounie, Elyse Nadjar, the career discover team and the administration.
