Jacob Kassin, son of our esteemed Chief Rabbi Saul Kassin, is a prominent and educated man in his own right. Mr. Kassin is constantly looking for ways to better our community and preserve its traditions and customs. For the past 10 years, Mr. Kassin has been compiling one of the most essential and indispensable publications ever to be produced in this community. Over the years, he observed how community members, rabbis and hazanim would constantly approach his father and grandfather with the many halachic inquiries they had concerning the Jewish religion and their prayers. Many people were at a loss, and sometimes even in dispute over the proper method of a law. That is why Jacob Kassin decided it was time to put these customs and rules into print, to serve as a constant reference for anyone with a question or doubt. "These laws are not archaic, but rather mundane," clarifies Mr. Kassin, who explains that these are laws and customs we live with year after year, every day of our life.
It is important to note that this guide is for all Jews, Sephardic and Ashkenazic, for all their readings are similar, and we all follow the same scriptures. What is so special about this book is that it doesn’t just dictate what the law is. It offers an explanation of the philosophy behind it, as well as a presentation of both sides. Many rabbis have different interpretations of a law, and the writers of this book do not want to choose an answer for you, so it presents all opinions and every side. It then discusses why someone agrees or disagrees and the choices that result. Mr Kassin anxiously awaited anyone who had a correction or change with open arms. This is the only way the book can fairly serve its community.
