Give up your need to always be right. There are so many of us who can’t stand the idea of being wrong—even at the risk of ending great relationships. It’s not worth it. Whenever you feel the need to fight over who is right and who is wrong, ask yourself this question: “Would I rather be right, or would I rather be kind?” Try saying, “You may be right,” and leave it at that.
Give up your need for control. It’s incredibly stressful to control everything that happens to you and around you—situations, events, people, etc. Whether they are family, friends or coworkers—just allow them to be. Allow everything and everyone to be just as they are and you will feel so much better.
Give up self-defeating talk. Are you hurting yourself due to a self-defeating mindset? Don’t believe everything that your mind is telling you—especially if it’s negative. Think positively. The mind is a superb instrument if used correctly. When used incorrectly, it becomes very destructive.
Stop complaining. Are you a complainer? Give up your constant need to complain about the people, situations and events that make you unhappy. Nothing and no one can make you unhappy, unless you allow it/them to. It’s not the situation that triggers those feelings, it’s how you choose to look at it. Never underestimate the power of positive thinking.
Stop criticizing. Give up your need to criticize everything. If you don’t like a situation, try to fix it. If you don’t like a person, try to avoid him. Criticizing, like complaining, solves nothing.
Stop resisting change. Change is good. Change helps you make improvements in your life and the lives of those around you.
Stop being afraid. Fear is just an illusion; it doesn’t exist—you create it. If you tell yourself that you’re not afraid, you won’t be. As Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.”
Stop making excuses. Instead of growing and working on improving ourselves and our lives, we get stuck, lying to ourselves, making up excuses, which usually are not even real. Try to do things that you think you can’t do and take responsibility for the things you can’t do. You’ll be surprised by what you can do once you put your mind to it.
Give up your need to impress others. Stop trying to be something that you’re not just to make others like you. The moment you stop trying, the moment you accept and embrace the real you—people will be drawn to you. Everyone likes a confident person.
Stop living in the past. This is difficult, especially when the past seems so much better than the present and the future looks frightening. However, the present is all we have. The past you are longing for—the past that you are dreaming about—that looks so good in retrospect was probably not as good as you remember it to be. It’s so important to be present in everything you do and enjoy life. After all, life is a journey, not a destination. Have a clear vision for the future and prepare yourself, but always be present in what you are doing.
If you don’t have to be right 100% of the time; if you stop trying to control those around you, take complete responsibility for your life, stop thinking negatively, accept change, be brave, stop making excuses, live for today and stop trying to live up to anyone else’s expectations you will be a much happier person. If this is too much to do all at once, pick one goal each month and eventually you will let go of all the negativity in your life.
