A True Celebration of the Arts
Since its inception in 2005, Encore has given community artists a forum to develop their creative expression and connect with others who share a passion for the arts. The response to this endeavor has been overwhelming and inspiring. In addition to all of the well-respected programs at the Sephardic Community Center, it is now also home to the Encore School of Music, Encore Jr., comedy, dance and fine arts classes, workshops and lectures and so much more.
The Encore summer showcase remains one of the highlights of the summer season at the Jersey Shore. This year, our community stars will have the opportunity to share their talents on the same grand stage as some of the greatest performers of the past eight decades.
The Historic Count Basie Theatre
Tony Bennett called it his favorite place. Art Garfunkel said, “this hall is to a singer what a Steinway is to a pianist,” and Lyle Lovett said, “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.”
The Count Basie Theatre is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is recognized by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts as a Major Presenting Organization for the State of New Jersey, by Pollstar Magazine as one of the top 100 worldwide theatre venues, and by Contribute Magazine as one of their top 200 investor-worthy charities.
Named for William “Count” Basie, whose famous tune “The Kid from Red Bank” is a favorite of jazz enthusiasts, this theater opened in 1927 as The Carlton Theater.
The notion of the theater as home for some of New Jersey’s most famous artists—including Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Southside Johnny and Asbury Jukes and Bon Jovi—has persisted through the years. The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, American Ballet Theater and Alvin Ailey Dance Company have also graced the venue’s majestic stage.
The Count Basie Theatre Today
During the summer of 2008, the theater closed for an $8 million dollar renovation that included restoration of the plasterwork, decorative painting, infrastructure and HVAC work and new carpeting and lighting, all of which restored the theatre to its former glory.
The Sephardic Community Center is looking forward to welcoming the cast of Encore 2011 along with the entire community to the celebration of the arts.
